Early life and backgroundRani Hazarika was born on 8 October 1984 in Guwahati, Assam. She grew up in a musical household and began performing on stage as a young child. Her father, Rose Hazarika, taught her the fundamentals of music and she began formal study of Indian classical vocal music at around six years of age. She attended Ambari High School in Guwahati and later earned a Bachelor of Music (Vocal) from Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow.
Career
Rani Hazarika built a career as a playback singer and musician, recording songs in multiple Indian languages. Over the years she has contributed to film soundtracks and albums in Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu and Kashmiri. She began getting wider visibility as a teenager and became a well-known face in Assam while still in school.
Early on she recorded jingles and took additional professional training from Santhosh Pandit and Jaspinder Narula. In 2007, at age 23, she auditioned for Indian Idol season 3 and reached the top 30 contestants. She has performed live frequently at exhibitions, private events and music shows, and has also sung title tracks for television serials and anchored some music programs.
Her film playback credits span regional and national cinema. She recorded for the Telugu film Yeh Kaisa Karz (Boss) in 2006 and contributed vocals to the Punjabi film EK-The Power of One in 2009. In Hindi cinema she sang on tracks including Kammo from Department (2012), and she was a vocalist on Nas Nas Mein for the film Welcome Back (2015). She also provided vocals for the song Sarkar in Udanchhoo (2018), and in 2022 recorded a song for the Tamil film Victim.
In 2014 Rani Hazarika and her husband, music director and producer Jaan Nissar Lone, launched AR Music Studios in Mumbai. The label, described as a first for Jammu and Kashmir, holds rights to an extensive catalogue of songs and has produced a large number of music videos, many filmed in Kashmir. Under AR Music Studios the couple recorded and released numerous tracks across several years, including Peer Myanio (2016), Jugni (2017), Maenzi Raath (2018), Fariyaad (2019), Bandeya (2020), Rouvmut Dildar (2020), Teri Yaad (2021) and other regional pieces. The studio also produced Kashmiri and Afghan-language songs that were part of its 2022 slate.
