Early life and backgroundRanjana Deshmukh was born on 23 July 1955 in Mumbai, where she also grew up and attended Parel English High School. She came from a family with strong roots in the performing arts: her father, Govardhan Deshmukh, was a theatre actor and her mother, Vatsala Deshmukh, worked in Marathi and Hindi films. After her parents divorced, Ranjana and her siblings lived with their maternal aunt Sandhya Shantaram, who was married to filmmaker V. Shantaram. Ranjana began acting at a very young age after being introduced to the film world by V. Shantaram.
Career
Ranjana’s screen career started in childhood and expanded across Marathi cinema with occasional work in Hindi and Telugu films. Her earliest listed film appearances include Marathi and Hindi projects from the mid-1960s, and she later worked in Telugu cinema in the 1970s. Over the 1970s and early 1980s she established herself as a leading actress in Marathi films, appearing in a wide range of roles in dramas, comedies and action pictures.
Her filmography from that period includes parts in titles such as Chandanachi Choli Anga Anga Jali (1975), Jhunj (1975), Asla Navra Nakoga Bai (1977), Channi (1977), Sasurvasheen (1978), and Sushila (1978). She continued to be active with roles in Are Sansar Sansar (1980), Devghar (1981), the comedy Ek Daav Bhutacha (1982), Galli Te Dilli, Bin Kamacha Navra (1984) and Zakhmi Wagin (1984). In 1987 she worked in the V. Shantaram-directed Hindi film Jhanjhaar. She also had a supporting role in the 1994 Hindi film Yeh Dillagi.
Ranjana received multiple acting honours during her career. She won Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards for the Marathi film Sushila (1978) and again at Filmfare for Savitri (1983). State government awards recognized her performances in Are Sansar Sansar (1981) and Gupchup Gupchup (1983).
A serious road accident in 1987 cut her screen career short. While traveling to Bangalore for Jhanjhaar, she was injured and lost both legs and a left hand; her co-travellers were not seriously hurt. After the accident she performed in at least one stage production, playing a woman confined to a wheelchair in the Marathi play Fakt Ekdaach.
