Ranu Sahu was born on 4 September 1984 in Panduka village, Chhura tehsil, in Raipur district, Chhattisgarh. She was raised in Chhura and attended the local government school in Panduka. She went on to study at the Govt. Dudhdhari Bajrang Girls' Post-Graduate Autonomous College in Raipur, affiliated with Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla University, where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on biology. Her family background includes her father, Arun Kumar Sahu, who ran a hardware shop, and her mother, Lakshmi Sahu, who has been involved in local politics.

Career

Ranu Sahu began her public-service career preparing for police examinations and became a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) after passing the Chhattisgarh PCS examination in 2007. She later cleared the UPSC and was selected for the Indian Administrative Service in the 2010 batch, securing an All-India rank of 88. She trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie before taking up field postings in Chhattisgarh.

Her early IAS assignments included a period as an under-trainee Assistant Collector at Durg, where she worked on land revenue management and district administration from June 2011 to July 2012. She served as Chief Executive Officer of Panchayati Raj in Koriya in early 2014.
