Ravi Behl Biography
Ravi Behl is an Indian actor and producer best known for co-producing and judging the long-running dance show Boogie Woogie. Beginning his career as a teen
Early life and backgroundRavi Behl was born on 10 May 1966 in Mumbai and grew up in a Punjabi Hindu family. He lost his father, film producer Sham Behl, at a young age and began working early in life. Behl attended Saint Theresa’s High School in Mumbai and later graduated from Shrimati Mithibai Motiram Kundnani College of Commerce & Economics (M. M. K. College) in Mumbai. He developed an early interest in martial arts and dance; as a boy he trained in karate and practiced with a nunchaku, hobbies that played a role in opening the door to the film industry.
Career
Behl entered Hindi cinema as a child actor, making his film debut in Morchha (1980) where he played the character Chhotu. His martial arts skills drew the attention of industry professionals and helped him secure early screen opportunities. Over the following decades he appeared in a range of films, with notable roles including Ravi Rastogi in Narsimha (1991), Inder in Dalaal (1993), Ravi Kapoor in Agni Sakshi (1996), and Arun in Ghulam-E-Mustafa (1997).
In 1994 Behl worked on the British television series The Far Pavilions, stepping into a role after the originally cast actor fell ill. During that production he encountered visiting international filmmakers, an episode he has recalled in interviews.
Beyond acting, Behl expanded into production and television. He co-created, co-produced and served as a judge on Boogie Woogie, the dance competition series that ran from 1996 to 2014 and introduced a new format of televised dance contest to Indian audiences. He has also recorded and appeared in music videos for several songs released around the late 1990s and 2000, including Ladkiyan, Jab Koi Tha, Bol Bol Sach Bol, and Har Pal.
After a long break from acting, which included a self-described ten-year hiatus following his time on Boogie Woogie, Behl returned to on-screen work in the 2020s. He appeared as Neel Behl in Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 (2022) and, in 2023, took on the role of Jaiveer Singh in the Indian adaptation of The Night Manager. Behl has said that the Covid-19 lockdown contributed to his decision to resume acting after a period away from the camera.
Public profile
Throughout his career Behl has been associated with both on-screen roles and behind-the-scenes production. His long association with Boogie Woogie made him a recognizable figure in Indian television for nearly two decades. He has spoken publicly about the choices that shaped his career, including stepping away for extended periods and the personal circumstances that influenced those breaks. Behl’s family includes relatives active in the film industry: his uncle Ramesh Behl was a director and his cousin Goldie Behl is a filmmaker. His sister Geeta Behl, who was also an actor, passed away in 2021, and his mother Savita Behl passed away in 2023.
Personal life
Ravi Behl has described aspects of his personal history in interviews. He became financially responsible at an early age after his father’s death, a factor he cites when explaining later decisions about work and time away from the industry. Behl has talked about a past long-distance relationship that ended and the impact that experience had on his outlook toward romantic relationships. Publicly available information identifies him as unmarried. His height is listed at approximately 170 cm (5'7"), with black eyes and grey hair.
Latest updates
After more than two decades away from acting, Behl re-entered mainstream screen work during the early 2020s. He was credited in Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 (2022) and returned in a prominent role in the 2023 web adaptation of The Night Manager, a project that marked his renewed presence in contemporary streaming drama.
