Early life and background

Ravi Varma was born on 29 September 1975 in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, and grew up in Hyderabad after his family moved there when he was two. He completed his schooling and higher education in Hyderabad and holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. He later pursued advanced studies in computers in the United States and completed an acting course at the New York Film Academy.

From a young age Varma trained in several performance disciplines. He began learning Kathak while in primary school, studied bhangra for around eight years, and practiced mime, performing at school events. His parents supported his interest in films provided he finished his studies first.

Career

Varma made his Telugu film debut in 2005, appearing as Sayed in Vennela. Early work included supporting roles in notable Telugu films such as Bommarillu (2006) and Jalsa (2008). He has continued to build a steady body of work with appearances in films across languages and on digital platforms.

He played the leading role of Karthik in the 2015 film Calling Bell. Varma has also been cast in a variety of supporting parts: Terror (2016), Mithai (2019), The Ghost (2022), and Michael (2023) are among his Telugu credits. In 2017 he appeared in the Tamil film Sathya as Bobby, and in 2019 he was seen in the Bollywood film Saaho in the role of Ajay.

Varma has been active in the streaming space as well. Between 2018 and 2021 he portrayed Nesamani in the Zee5 series Oru Oorla Oru Rajakumari. He took a role in Aha's web series SIN in 2020 and played Nagendra in the 2022 Disney+ Hotstar series 9 Hours. In 2023 he appeared in the SonyLIV web series Bad Trip. For his work on 9 Hours he received recognition at the Indian Telly Streaming Awards in 2022, winning Best Actor in a Negative Role for a web series.
