Renuka Chowdhury Biography

Renuka Chowdhury is an Indian politician with a long career in state and national politics. A former member of both the Rajya Sabha and state legislative/

Early life and background

Renuka Chowdhury was born on 13 August 1954 in Visakhapatnam, in what was then Andhra State. The daughter of an Indian Air Force officer, she spent her childhood moving around the country and picking up different languages and cultural experiences. She attended Welham Girls' School in Dehradun and later earned an M.A. in Industrial Psychology from Karnataka University in 1976. She also completed diploma studies in marketing management, public relations, and advertising.

After her marriage in October 1973 to businessman Sreedhar Chowdhury, she spent a decade primarily as a homemaker before entering electoral politics in the mid-1980s.

Career

Chowdhury began her political life at the municipal level as a corporator for Banjara Hills in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. She joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1984 and was active in the party through the late 1980s and 1990s. During this period she served in the Rajya Sabha and held responsibilities including the chief whip of the Telugu Desam parliamentary party.

Her ministerial experience at the national level dates back to the late 1990s and 2000s. She served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in 1997–1998 while with the TDP. After switching to the Indian National Congress in 1998, she was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Khammam in 1999 and again in 2004.

In the Union government formed by the Congress-led coalition, Chowdhury was given independent charge as Union Minister of State for Tourism from May 2004 until January 2006. She then served as Union Minister of Women and Child Development from January 2006 through May 2009. Her parliamentary career includes two extended periods as a Rajya Sabha member representing Andhra Pradesh: first from 1986 to 1998 and later from 3 April 2012 to 2 April 2018. She also served on parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Finance and the Committee on the Empowerment of Women.

Electoral contests during her career include a 1993 by-election defeat from the Panyam assembly seat, a successful run for the Khammam assembly in 1999 and 2004, and an unsuccessful Lok Sabha contest for Khammam in 2009.

Public profile

Chowdhury has been a prominent and sometimes polarizing figure in public life. She has been associated with outspoken commentary on social issues and has led public initiatives, such as a campaign in response to the Mangalore pub attack. Her advocacy while heading the women and child development ministry included supporting the Domestic Violence Act of 2005, a law that attracted both strong support and significant criticism from various quarters.

Her tenure in public life has included a number of controversies. Incidents reported in the public record range from a 1993 case involving an allegation of mistreatment of a traffic officer (from which she was discharged in 2005) to later complaints and notices over public statements. In 2022 she was booked in connection with an interaction with a police sub-inspector during a protest in Hyderabad; she later offered an explanation that she had been jostled while moving through a crowd. In 2011 her name surfaced in testimony connected to a tax-evasion probe; she denied the allegation and pursued legal notices against media reporting she said was false.

Policy positions and initiatives she championed drew debate. One proposal she advanced while minister involved supplying pre-packaged nutrition to malnourished children under a national scheme; that recommendation was rejected by planning bodies and the cabinet committee on economic affairs on health and implementation grounds.

Chowdhury remained a public political figure into the late 2010s. A notable moment in 2018 received attention when she laughed audibly during a speech in the Rajya Sabha, drawing a public response from the Prime Minister. Her Rajya Sabha term concluded on 2 April 2018.
