Rini Simon Khanna was born in 1964 in Kerala into a family with an Air Force background. Frequent relocations during her childhood meant she attended multiple schools; her early education took place at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi and The Air Force School, New Delhi. She completed a BA (Honours) in English from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University in 1984, followed by a post‑graduate diploma in journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in 1985 and an MA in History from Delhi University in 1986.

Career

Rini’s broadcasting career began while she was still a schoolgirl. She joined All India Radio at a very young age and was involved in a variety of programs including request and music shows, roving microphone features and youth‑focused slots. By 1982 she had become a primetime newsreader for All India Radio.

While studying at Jesus and Mary College she auditioned for Doordarshan; after completing her degree she joined Doordarshan in 1984 as an English newsreader and was initially assigned parliamentary bulletins. A noted critic later recommended her for national news, where she worked alongside other prominent anchors. Over the course of her broadcasting career she spent 17 years with Doordarshan before leaving the organisation in 2001.

Beyond live newsreading, Rini has worked as a voice artist for documentaries and commercials. She is also one of the voices used for the English announcements on the Delhi Metro system.
