Early life and backgroundRitu Phogat was born on 2 May 1994 in Balali, Haryana, India, into a family long associated with wrestling. The daughter of amateur wrestler and senior Olympics coach Mahavir Singh Phogat and Shobha (Daya) Kaur, she grew up in the same Haryana village that produced several internationally successful wrestlers. Ritu started formal wrestling training under her father at about eight years of age. She completed education up to the 10th standard before leaving school to concentrate on her athletic career.

Ritu’s competitive wrestling career was built in the 48 kg freestyle category. As a junior and cadet competitor she collected multiple medals at continental and world events, including gold medals at the Junior Asia and Cadet Asia Championships in 2011, a bronze at the Cadet World Championship the same year, and a junior world silver in 2014. She made her international debut at the FILA Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2014.
At the senior level she won gold at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 2016 and earned a silver medal at the World U-23 Wrestling Championship in 2017, becoming the first Indian to stand on that podium in the U-23 Worlds.
