Roger Binny Biography
Roger Michael Humphrey Binny is a former Indian all‑rounder whose swing bowling, lower‑order finishing and outstanding fielding earned him a key place in 0
Early life and backgroundRoger Michael Humphrey Binny was born on 19 July 1955 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He attended schools in Bangalore and Yercaud, including St. Germain’s Academy, St. Joseph’s Indian High School PU College and Montfort School, Yercaud. Early in his sporting life he represented his school in football and hockey and held a national record in the javelin throw.
Career
Binny made his first‑class debut at age 20 for Karnataka in a match against Kerala at Raichur. After a modest start he produced strong all‑round displays in subsequent seasons, registering big scores with the bat and becoming effective with the ball. His highest first‑class score of 211 not out came in an opening stand that at the time set a record partnership for his team.
He debuted for India in Test cricket on 21 November 1979 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and made his One Day International debut on 6 December 1980 in Melbourne. Binny was a right‑handed batter and a right‑arm medium‑pace bowler who could swing the ball both ways. He was also widely regarded as an outstanding fielder.
Binny established himself through a mix of bowling, lower‑order batting and sharp fielding. In Tests he produced notable spells against strong batting lineups, and his performances on the 1983–84 tour of the West Indies included the scalps of Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards. In 1986 he enjoyed success in England with wickets at Lord’s and a five‑for at Leeds, and his six wickets in an innings at Eden Gardens in 1986 earned him his lone Test Player of the Match award.
His most prominent international contribution came in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Binny finished the tournament as India’s leading wicket‑taker, with key spells that included 4 for 29 against Australia in a do‑or‑die group match and crucial scalps of top West Indies batsmen during the competition. He also contributed useful lower‑order runs and played a part in the final.
Binny continued to serve India through the mid‑1980s and was part of the 1987 World Cup squad. His international playing career concluded when he retired from international cricket on 9 October 1987 after his last ODI. He remained active in domestic cricket until 1992.
After his playing days, Binny moved into coaching and administration. He coached India’s Under‑19 side that won the Under‑19 World Cup in 2000 and later coached Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He served as a national selector in 2012. In October 2019 he became President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. In October 2022 he was appointed chief of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a post he later vacated on 19 July 2025.
Public profile
Binny is noted for several statistical distinctions: among Indian Test bowlers he ranks highly for strike‑rate and bowling average, and he sits among India’s most economical bowlers in ODIs. He is also one half of the only Indian father‑son combination to both play in Cricket World Cups; his son, Stuart Binny, followed Roger into international cricket as a right‑handed middle‑order batter and fast‑bowling all‑rounder.
Throughout his career and afterwards Binny has been described as a flamboyant presence on the field who could contribute in multiple departments — as an opener, a finisher, a swing bowler and a slip/close fielder.
Personal life
Roger Binny is married to Cynthia. The couple have children including son Stuart Binny, who became an Indian international cricketer, and daughters Laura and Lisa. His daughter‑in‑law is Mayanti Langer, a sports journalist. Binny is of Indian nationality and is identified as an Anglo‑Indian in accounts of his background.
