Early life and background

Rohan Joshi was born on 22 February 1983 and raised in South Mumbai, Maharashtra. He attended Cumballa Hill High School in Mumbai and later enrolled in an engineering programme at KJ Somaiya College of Engineering. He left the engineering course after the second semester. Joshi has described experiencing anxiety and a panic attack as a teenager while at college. His family background includes a father named Dilip Joshi (deceased) and a mother, Kumudini Kiran Joshi, who worked at the Foundation for Environmental Medicine. He has a sister, Renuka Modi.

Career

Joshi’s interest in performance and humour developed through school and early extracurricular activity. He entered Mumbai’s nascent stand-up scene in 2008, winning the open-mic Hamateur Night the same year and choosing to pursue comedy professionally. Early writing work included contributions to youth-focused humour outlets and stints with Vir Das’s Weirdass Comedy collective; he also performed improv with an ensemble that included Vir Das and others.

In 2011 Joshi performed internationally, appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at The Comedy Store in London. He worked as a television writer on the MTV mini-series Bring On the Night (2012) and wrote humour columns and pieces for publications such as Mid-Day.

In 2012 Joshi became closely associated with the podcast and later YouTube channel All India Bakchod (AIB), co-created by colleagues Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba. Joshi and fellow performers Ashish Shakya and others became the quartet most closely linked with AIB’s sketches and satirical shows. AIB produced widely viewed parodies and sketches that built a large online presence, including branded collaborations as the channel grew. Joshi scripted and starred in many AIB videos and was a co-creator of the satirical news show On Air With AIB, which he presented from 2015 to 2018.

Alongside sketch work, Joshi has screen acting credits and stand-up specials. His film debut appearance was in Baar Baar Dekho (2016) as Raj. He appeared in web series including The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family (2018) and Mentalhood (2020). In 2020 he released a stand-up special titled Wake and Bake on Amazon Prime Video. He served as a judge on the 2018 Indian stand-up competition series TLC Queens Of Comedy and worked as a mentor on the Amazon Prime Video series Comicstaan (2022). In 2021 he participated in the reality comedy show Comedy Premium League as a member of the IDGAF Iguanas team.

After AIB’s activity slowed following events in 2018, Joshi shifted his output to his own channels. He launched an eponymous YouTube channel featuring interview-style episodes titled 30 Questions with Rohan Joshi, live-streamed gaming sessions, and a podcast called The Sidepod. He has also continued to perform live stand-up and take part in television and streaming projects.
