Rohit Khandelwal is an Indian model, actor and television personality from Hyderabad best known for winning the Mr India title in 2015 and becoming the Mr.

Early life and background

Rohit Khandelwal was born on 19 August 1989 in Hyderabad (then part of Andhra Pradesh, now in Telangana). He comes from a Marwari family with roots in Rajasthan. After finishing school he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Aurora’s Degree College in Hyderabad.

Rohit has described a difficult school experience that left him introverted and often excluded by peers. He later said his college years were a turning point: academics improved, he made friends, and he began taking part in dance competitions. Before moving into modelling and acting he worked in several corporate roles, including as ground staff with SpiceJet and as a technical support assistant at Dell. He also had a short stint at HSBC.

Career

Rohit moved to Mumbai to pursue opportunities in acting and entertainment. Early on he faced setbacks, including failed auditions and projects that did not materialize. He credited persistence and hard work for helping him get through a period of struggle when he had little work and limited finances.

His on-screen debut came in the 2011 short film The Journey, in which he played Siddarth. He later appeared on television in shows such as Yeh Hai Aashiqui (2014) on Bindass, Million Dollar Girl (2014; Channel V), Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2015; Zing) and MTV Big F (2015; MTV). He also acted in the 2022 short film Chalti Rahe Zindagi as the character Akash.

Rohit’s commercial work began in 2013 with a TV commercial for Malabar Gold. He went on to feature in ads for brands including Duhita & Manav, Himalaya Quista PRO, Jio and Kamal Watch Company, and appeared in print campaigns for Raymond and Myntra. He has walked the runway for several Indian fashion designers and been on the covers of magazines such as TMM, Society and Tulip.

In July 2015 Rohit Khandelwal won the Mr India contest held in Mumbai. The following year he represented India at the Mr World competition in Southport, England, and was declared the overall winner in July 2016. Rohit has also received honors such as the Indian of the Year Award at the 21 Young Guns Awards in Goa in 2016.
