Early life and backgroundLuteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor was born on 8 March 1984 in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. He grew up in the Wellington region and attended Wairarapa College in Masterton and Palmerston North Boys' High School. Taylor has Samoan ancestry on his mother's side and was raised in a Christian household. From a young age he played a variety of sports, including hockey, which he has said influenced his batting technique.
Career
Taylor made his international debut for New Zealand in one-day internationals on 1 March 2006 against the West Indies in Napier. He played his first Twenty20 international on 22 December 2006 versus Sri Lanka in Wellington and debuted in Test cricket on 8 November 2007 against South Africa in Johannesburg. Across a long international career he became New Zealand's regular top-order batsman and wore the number 3 jersey for his country.
He recorded important milestones early on, including a maiden ODI century in just his third one-day appearance, and several standout innings that helped define his reputation. Notable highlights include an aggressive century against Australia in 2010 that ranked as the fastest Test ton by a New Zealander at the time, and a 290 against Australia in November 2015 that became the highest Test score by an overseas batsman in Australia. On 21 February 2020 he became the first cricketer to play 100 internationals in each of the three formats.
Taylor also served as New Zealand's ODI captain for the first time in 2010 when he stood in for Daniel Vettori. In international white-ball cricket he produced match-winning chases and eye-catching innings in domestic T20 leagues. In the Indian Premier League he represented teams including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors and Rajasthan Royals, producing a memorable 81 not out off 33 balls for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009.
In domestic and franchise cricket he turned out for several teams across New Zealand, England, Australia and the Caribbean, including Central Districts, Sussex, Durham, Victoria, Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel, St Lucia Zouks and others.
Taylor announced his retirement from international cricket on 30 December 2021. His last matches in each format took place between 2020 and 2022: his most recent T20 international appearance was on 20 November 2020 at Bay Oval, his final Test was on 9 January 2022 at Hagley Oval, and his last ODI came on 4 April 2022 against the Netherlands at Seddon Park.
Public profile
Taylor became known for a number of signature and record achievements. Early in his career he played an influential role in successful pursuits, including a 117 against Australia that helped New Zealand chase 336 and win the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in 2007. He also produced rapid late-innings hitting, most famously during the 2011 World Cup when he accelerated dramatically in a birthday innings against Pakistan.
He has been open about his background and has discussed the experience of being a non-white player in New Zealand cricket. Off the field he married Victoria Jayne Brown on 25 June 2011. The couple has three children: a daughter, Mackenzie, born 24 September 2011, and a son, Jonty, born 16 February 2014, plus one other son mentioned in available information. Taylor has said personal routines and small gestures — such as a habit he developed when he reaches a century — are connected to his family.
