Ruturaj Gaikwad Biography

Indian right-handed top-order batsman who rose through Maharashtra age-group cricket, starred for India A, and became Chennai Super Kings’ captain. Noted‌‌

Early life and background
Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad was born on 31 January 1997 in Pune, Maharashtra. He grew up in the Pune area and came through local coaching setups, practising at the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy in Pimpri-Chinchwad during his formative years. Gaikwad represented Maharashtra in age-group cricket, appearing for the state under-16 and under-19 sides before progressing to senior domestic cricket.

Career
Gaikwad made his first-class debut for Maharashtra during the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season. His steady performances at the state level drew wider attention and, in December 2018, he was picked up by Chennai Super Kings at the Indian Premier League auction for the base price. He was part of the CSK squad in the 2019 IPL and later travelled with the team to the UAE for the 2020 edition of the tournament. Following a COVID-19 infection while in biosecure bubbles in 2020, Gaikwad returned to practice and resumed playing later that year.

On the domestic representative front he has been named in squads across India A, India B and India Blue. While playing for India A in June 2019, Gaikwad produced a standout innings of 187 not out against Sri Lanka A, a performance that earned him the Man of the Match award. In November 2022, playing for Maharashtra in a Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final, he struck an extraordinary over that yielded 43 runs, including seven sixes due to a no-ball and free-hit situation.

Internationally, Gaikwad made his T20 debut for India on 28 July 2021 against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium. He later made his One Day International debut on 6 October 2022 against South Africa at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. He bats right-handed and has been associated with jersey number 31 for India Under-23 and for Chennai Super Kings. Stephen Fleming is listed as one of his coaches and mentors.

Leadership and franchise cricket
Gaikwad’s leadership credentials advanced in recent years. In July 2023 he was named captain of India’s men’s squad for the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Ahead of the 2024 IPL season, he was appointed captain of Chennai Super Kings, succeeding M.S. Dhoni in that role. As captain of CSK, he registered a notable milestone on 8 April 2024 by becoming the first CSK captain in five years to score a half-century in an IPL match, against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Playing style and records
A top-order right-handed batsman, Gaikwad has produced several eye-catching innings across formats and levels. His domestic record includes both the unbeaten 187 for India A and the 43-run over in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has also recorded an instance of hitting seven sixes in a single over during that quarter-final match. These performances underline his ability to construct long innings and launch powerful finishing blows when required.

Public profile
Gaikwad is a familiar face at Chennai Super Kings’ training and match environments and has been seen alongside senior teammates, including Mahendra Singh Dhoni, during practice sessions. Off the field, he enjoys golf and travelling. He married Utkarsha Pawar on 3 June 2023; their mehndi ceremony took place on 1 June 2023 in Mumbai.

Latest updates
In 2023 he took on leadership of India’s Asian Games side. Ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League he was named CSK’s captain, and early in that season he produced a half-century as captain on 8 April 2024. His domestic and franchise careers continue to be marked by significant individual contributions, including the long unbeaten 187 for India A and the remarkable 43-run over in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
