Early life and background
Sergio Michel Pérez Mendoza was born on January 26, 1990, in Guadalajara, Mexico. He grew up in a family with deep ties to motorsport: his father, Antonio Pérez Garibay, was a racer who later worked as a driver manager, and his brother Antonio also raced. Encouraged from a young age, Pérez began karting at around six years old and quickly showed promise in youth events, collecting wins and podiums as he progressed through higher karting classes.

As a teenager he moved abroad to develop his racing career. Backed by support that included the Mexican telecommunications sponsor Telmex, Pérez competed in the United States’ Skip Barber National Championship and then relocated to Europe for Formula BMW in Germany. He continued upward through British Formula 3, where he won the National Class in 2007 and placed well in the International Class in 2008, before stepping into the GP2 feeder series in 2008–09.

Career
Pérez made his Formula One debut at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix after Sauber announced he would join the team for that season. His first appearance impressed observers when he ran a single-stop strategy to finish in the points, although his team’s results that weekend were later affected by technical disqualifications. During the team’s financial turmoil in 2018, Force India entered administration and was bought by a consortium led by Lawrence Stroll. The operation re-emerged as Racing Point Force India, and Pérez remained with the team as it returned to competition.
