Sudhir Dalvi is an Indian actor whose career spans theatre, film and television. Best known for his portrayal of Sai Baba in the 1977 film Shirdi Ke Sai Ba

Early life and background

Sudhir Dalvi was born on 20 March 1939 in Thane, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is an Indian national and was raised in the Mumbai area. Dalvi trained academically to the level of a graduate and holds a Bachelor of Architecture. Before moving full-time into acting, he worked as an interior designer with established architects in Mumbai.

Career

Dalvi began his performing career in theatre. He was active with prominent Mumbai theatre groups, including Theatre Unit and the Indian People’s Theatre Association, which provided the foundation for his later work in film and television.

His film debut came with 27 Down in 1974. Over the course of a long screen career he has appeared in more than 200 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Marathi, English, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Punjabi, Marwari and Urdu. His film credits include Shirdi Ke Sai Baba (1977), Gandhi (1982), Khal Nayak (1993), Dana Panin (1989), Jwala Daku (1981) and a range of other titles such as Chirutha, Gehrai, Patitpawan and Guru. In several films he has been cast in the role of a fakir or as Shirdi Saibaba.

On television, Dalvi’s work spans a number of well-known series. He appeared in landmark and popular shows such as Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan (1986), Bharat Ek Khoj and Mirza Ghalib, and was part of serials including Junoon (1994), Ghutan (1997), Om Namah Shivaya (1997) and the 1990s daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Dalvi’s performance as Shirdi Saibaba in the 1977 film earned him recognition from Film World magazine, which named him Best Character Artist for that role. Later, on 13 January 2018, he received the Janakavi P Sawlaram award from the Thane Municipal Corporation and the Janakavi P Savlaram Kala Samiti.

Sudhir Dalvi is married to Suhas Dalvi. The couple have one son, Rohit Dalvi. His parents were Prabhakar Dalvi and Induprabha Dalvi, both deceased. He follows the Hindu faith and lives in Mumbai.
