Vir Das Biography

Vir Das is an Indian stand-up comedian, actor, musician and multi-hyphenate entertainer who built a career across India and the United States. Born in Deh

Early life and background

Vir Saran Das was born on 31 May 1979 in Dehradun (then part of Uttar Pradesh, now Uttarakhand). His family moved to Lagos, Nigeria, when he was an infant after his father found work there and his mother pursued further studies. Because of safety and educational concerns in Nigeria, his parents sent him back to India at age nine, and he spent much of his childhood in boarding schools.

Das grew up moving between India and Nigeria during his formative years. His schooling included time at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and Delhi Public School, New Delhi. He developed an early interest in public speaking and performance—discovering a knack for cracking jokes during a school debate at age twelve—and was active in debates, drama and athletics. He later enrolled at Sri Venkateswara College in Delhi through a sports quota as a basketball player.

After being inspired by American collegiate comedy films, Das pursued further studies in the United States. He attended Knox College in Illinois on scholarship, completing a double major in economics and theatre. While at Knox he picked up the guitar, played on the streets to earn money, and wrote a 60-minute thesis show that foreshadowed his move into comedy and performance. He also took an acting course at the Stanislavsky School at Harvard University.

Career

Das began working professionally in both acting and stand-up. His on-screen debut came in the American TV film The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb (2006), and he appeared in Bollywood with a small role in Namastey London (2007). He later moved more prominently into Indian cinema with roles in films such as Delhi Belly (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013), and appeared on American television as FBI agent Jai Datta in Whiskey Cavalier (2019).

Stand-up has been a throughline of Das’s career. He has written and toured numerous longform shows across more than a decade and a half, including Walking on Broken Das (2007), History of India: VIRitten (2010), Battle of Da Sexes (2014), Unbelievablish (2015), On The Pot (2016), BoardingDAS (2017), The Loved (2019), and Vir Das: Manic Man (2021). These projects established him as a fixture on the live comedy circuit and showcased his blend of personal storytelling and cultural commentary.

Beyond stand-up and film, Das works as a musician, producer, YouTuber and entrepreneur. He has combined these interests across live performance, recorded specials and scripted projects. His series Hasmukh (2020) for a streaming platform is one example of his work in long-form scripted comedy.

Public profile

Das’s family background includes parents Ranu and Madhur Das and an older sister, Trisha Das, who has worked as a documentary filmmaker and writer. His mother later worked in roles with international organisations and in television; his sister’s film work has received recognition at national and festival levels.

Physically, Das is approximately 174 cm tall (about 5 feet 8½ inches) with black hair and black eyes. He is married to Shivani Mathur; the couple wed on 15 October 2014 in Sri Lanka. His religion is listed as Hinduism and he follows a non-vegetarian diet.

Throughout his career Das has faced public controversies and legal complaints tied to material in both live performance and scripted work, including interruptions by police at a 2015 show, a complaint relating to portrayal of lawyers in Hasmukh, a high-profile monologue delivered at the John F. Kennedy Center in 2021 that generated debate, cancellations of shows following protests in 2022, and an FIR linked to an alleged copyright dispute filed that year. These incidents have been part of the wider public conversation around his work.

Awards and recognition

Das’s creative work has received industry recognition. Notably, on 20 November 2023 he was associated with winning the Best Comedy Series award at the 51st International Emmy Awards held in New York, an accolade reflecting the international visibility of projects he has been involved with.

Latest updates

In addition to continuing live performances and recorded specials through 2021, Das’s profile expanded with projects across film, television and streaming platforms. His ongoing activity spans stand-up tours, scripted series, acting and musical pursuits.

Personal notes

Das has several tattoos, including a pocket watch and quote on his right forearm, cardinal directions on his right bicep, and a phoenix with a microphone on his left bicep; the total number of tattoos noted is six. He cites influences such as Eddie Izzard and American comedic forms, and has spoken publicly about his early struggles at open-mic nights in the United States before establishing himself.
