Virbhadra Singh Biography

Virbhadra Singh was a long-serving Indian politician from Himachal Pradesh who held national cabinet posts and served six terms as the state's Chief Minis

Early life and background

Raja Virbhadra Singh was born on 23 June 1934 in Sarahan (then in Punjab, British India), into the royal family of Rampur Bushahr in what is now Himachal Pradesh. He attended Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and later earned a BA (Hons.) at St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He was known locally by the honorific Raja Sahib and maintained interests outside politics that included reading and listening to music.

Political career

Singh entered electoral politics in the early 1960s. He first won a Lok Sabha seat in the 1962 general election and was re-elected in 1967 and 1971. Over the decades that followed he combined state and national roles: he served as a Union deputy minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation in 1976–77 and later held junior and cabinet-level ministries, including Minister of State for Industries & Production in the early 1980s, Minister for Steel from May 2009 to January 2011, and Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises from January 2011 to June 2012.

At the state level, Virbhadra Singh was a central figure in Himachal Pradesh politics. He was elected from the Jubbal-Kotkhai constituency when he first became chief minister in 1983, and across his career he served six times as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. He was also president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee from February 1992 to September 1994. In addition to elected office, he was a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 1976.

Public service and other roles

Beyond partisan roles, Singh had a presence in civic and cultural organizations. He was associated with groups such as Friends of the Soviet Union, the Indo-Soviet Friendship Society, and served as President of the Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan in Himachal Pradesh. He held the honorary rank of Captain in the Indian Army and, while serving as chief minister, also took on the state education portfolio. His contributions to community causes and environment-related initiatives were recognized with awards that included honors for work in scouting and for leadership in environmental governance and agricultural marketing.

Controversies and legal matters

At various points Singh's career was the subject of legal scrutiny. A charge sheet was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2016 in a disproportionate assets case that named him and his wife. Other matters recorded in public records included allegations related to forgery and use of forged documents, and there were public controversies over some of his statements on sensitive incidents.

Personal life and family

Singh was married twice. His first wife, Rajkumari Rattan Kumari, married him in 1954 and died in 1983. He later married Pratibha Singh in 1985; Pratibha Singh is also active in politics. His children include son Vikramaditya Singh, who has served as president of the Himachal Pradesh State Youth Congress, and daughters Rajkumari Jyotsna Kumari, the late Rajkumari Anuradha Kumari, Rajkumari Abhilasha Kumari (a judge), Rajkumari Meenakshi Kumari, and Aparajita Singh.

Later years and death

Virbhadra Singh remained active in state politics into his later life. He contested the 2017 state assembly elections; public records note that he lost that contest. He died on 8 July 2021 at Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital in Shimla. He was 87 years old, and multi-organ failure is recorded as the cause of death.

Public profile

Throughout his long political life, Singh was identified with the Indian National Congress and was often politically opposed to leaders from other parties in the state, including Prem Kumar Dhumal. He was a recognizable figure in Himachal Pradesh — a former royal who became a multiple-term chief minister and a national minister — and remained connected to public life through both family members and institutional roles.
