Vishal Garg Biography

Vishal Garg is an Indo‑American entrepreneur best known as the founder and CEO of mortgage lender Better.com. Born in India and raised in Queens, New York,

Early life and background

Vishal Garg was born in India in 1979 and moved with his family to Queens, New York when he was seven. He attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and went on to study at NYU Stern School of Business, where he completed a BS in Finance and International Business. Garg began working in finance after graduation, joining Morgan Stanley in 1998.

Career

Garg’s early ventures included co-founding One Zero Capital, an investment holding company, in 1999. He later became a founding partner in Phoenix Holdings, an insurance firm, in 2011. In January 2014 he launched Better.com, a digital mortgage company based in the New York area. Within a few years Better.com grew into a prominent mortgage lender backed by several major financial firms and was named to Forbes’ Fintech 50 list in 2020.

Earlier in his career Garg co-founded an online student loan business, MyRichUncle (MRU Holdings), with a school classmate. The student loan company ultimately faced bankruptcy in 2009 and later disputes arose between the co‑founders about the handling of funds and assets related to that business.

Garg has spoken about founding a mortgage company after experiencing delays and inefficiencies in the homebuying process while trying to buy a home with his growing family. That experience helped shape Better.com’s product focus on streamlining mortgage origination.

Public profile

Garg’s public profile has included both business recognition and controversy. Better.com’s rapid growth and its investor backing brought significant attention to the company and to Garg as its CEO. At the same time, Garg has been involved in legal and personal disputes dating back to the MyRichUncle era, and his conduct during workforce reductions at Better.com drew widespread criticism.

In December 2021 Better.com laid off about 900 employees in a single company meeting conducted by video conference. The event generated strong backlash and prompted Garg to send an internal apology acknowledging that he mishandled the communication of the layoffs. Shortly afterward an earlier internal message from Garg that used harsh language about staff performance circulated publicly and added to the criticism.

In subsequent interviews Garg has discussed the experience of leading those reductions and said it prompted him to focus on becoming more empathetic in his interactions with employees and to change how he shows up as a leader.

Personal life

Garg is married to Sarita James, who is identified as the CEO of an admissions software company. The couple have three children, including a daughter named Uma. He is described as Indo‑American and holds American nationality.

Philanthropy and other activities

Garg has been involved in philanthropic activity in New York City. In collaboration with a local education nonprofit he donated funds in 2021 to support technology, connectivity and supplies for thousands of public school students in New York.

Latest updates

In interviews after the 2021 layoffs Garg has said he worked on changing his leadership approach to be more empathetic and to treat employees with the same customer‑focused mindset he applies to Better.com’s customers. Better.com remained a high‑profile fintech company with notable investor support through the early 2020s.
