Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is a Russian politician and former intelligence officer who has served multiple terms as President of the Russian Federation.A

Early life and background

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born on 7 October 1952 in Leningrad (today Saint Petersburg). He grew up in the city where he attended local schools, including School No. 193 at Baskov Lane and later High School 281. He studied law at Leningrad State University and later completed a kandidat-level degree in economics at Saint Petersburg Mining University in 1997.

Putin’s parents were Maria Ivanovna Putina, a factory worker, and Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin, who served in the Soviet Navy and was associated with wartime units during World War II. He had two brothers; one, Viktor, died in childhood during the Siege of Leningrad.

Career

Putin began his professional life in Soviet intelligence and military service. His early career included work with the KGB starting in 1975 and later positions in Russian intelligence and related services. He received a Bronze medal for faithful service from East Germany during his time in Soviet-era service.

In the 1990s Putin moved into municipal and then national politics in Saint Petersburg, serving as an advisor on international affairs to the city’s mayor and later holding leadership roles in the city administration and external relations committee. He was active in the Saint Petersburg branch of the Our Home Is Russia party and held positions connected to the city’s media and administration.

By the mid-1990s he transitioned to roles in the presidential administration in Moscow, including deputy chief positions and leadership of the Main Control Directorate of the Presidential Property Management Department. In 1997–1999 he served in senior roles with the FSB and was appointed director of that service from 1997 to 1999.

Putin rose rapidly in federal government at the end of the 1990s. He was named one of three first deputy prime ministers and then acting prime minister in August 1999, became prime minister that month, and was serving as acting president by the end of 1999. He was elected president in 2000, re-elected in 2004, and after serving as prime minister again from 2008 was elected president for additional terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024. Throughout this period he has held the role of Supreme Commander-in-Chief and retained dominant influence over Russia’s political direction.

These include orders and decorations from nations such as Vietnam, Kazakhstan, France, Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Belarus, Monaco, Cuba, Serbia, Guinea, Turkmenistan, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, China, Angola, and others. He has been granted honorary doctorates by several universities and received a range of orders and distinctions from both state and non-state bodies.

Public profile

He is widely recognised as the longest-serving president in the history of the Russian Federation and is described as one of the most prominent political figures internationally. His appearance is commonly described as salt-and-pepper hair and blue eyes, and his height is listed at approximately 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm).

Personal life

Officially, Putin was married to Lyudmila Aleksandrovna (formerly Lyudmila Ocheretnaya) from 28 July 1983 until their divorce in April 2014. He is reported to have four children: two daughters with his former wife, Maria and Katerina, and two sons whose parentage has been the subject of public speculation. He identifies as a Russian Orthodox Christian and lists hobbies that include horse riding, fishing, skiing, rafting, and an interest in wildlife and scientific projects. His primary residence is given as the Novo-Ogarevo estate in the Odintsovsky District near Moscow.

Controversies

Public reporting has associated Putin with a range of controversies and criticisms. These include allegations related to restrictions on independent media and the treatment of critics, as well as international disputes connected to events in Ukraine and other foreign-policy matters. Several honours and recognitions once held by or awarded to him have in some cases been subsequently revoked by institutions. He has also been the subject of intense international scrutiny and sanctions in relation to Russian state actions.
