Wally Funk Biography

Wally Funk is an American aviator and commercial astronaut whose long career in aviation culminated in a suborbital spaceflight in 2021. A member of the 13

Early life and background

Mary Wallace “Wally” Funk was born on February 1, 1939, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and grew up in Taos, New Mexico. Her parents ran a small chain of shops in Taos. From a very young age she was drawn to aircraft and outdoor pursuits; childhood memories include early rides at a nearby airport, building model planes, horseback riding and marksmanship contests. Funk has described herself as an adventurous, tomboyish child whose family encouraged her independence and interest in flying.

Education

Funk attended local schools in Taos before entering Stephen’s College in Columbia, Missouri, where she completed an Associate of Arts degree and earned her pilot’s license. She later studied at Oklahoma State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. While at OSU she completed multiple flight ratings and participated in the university’s Flying Aggies program, competing in intercollegiate air meets and serving as an officer in the team.

Career

Wally Funk’s aviation career spans instructional work, regulatory inspection, accident investigation and commercial piloting. She earned a long list of flight ratings including commercial and multi-engine certificates, seaplane and glider qualifications, instrument certification, flight instructor credentials and an Airline Transport Rating.

In 1960, at about age 21, Funk became the first female civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, teaching both enlisted and commissioned Army personnel. She later worked as a certified flight instructor, charter pilot and chief pilot in Hawthorne, California, and taught aeronautical science classes at Redondo High School.

During the 1960s she joined the privately funded Woman in Space Program and completed a battery of physical and psychological tests; she was one of the group known as the Mercury 13 who demonstrated that women could endure astronaut-style evaluations. Although the program did not result in early flights for its participants, it marked Funk as a pioneer in the push to qualify women for spaceflight.

In the early 1970s Funk moved into federal aviation service. After completing the FAA General Aviation Operations Inspector Academy course in 1971, she became the first woman in the United States to finish that program. She later served in roles related to Systems Worthiness Analysis Program work and inspected flight schools, air taxi operations and charter services across the Southwest. In December 1974 she joined the National Transportation Safety Board as the agency’s first female air safety investigator, a role that involved training and on-scene investigation of aircraft accidents.

Over decades of active flying and professional service Funk accumulated substantial experience in the cockpit. Her logged flight time reached thousands of hours, and she trained more than three thousand pilots across a broad range of certificates and ratings.

Spaceflight and later recognition

Funk achieved a long-sought personal milestone on July 20, 2021, when she flew on a suborbital mission with Blue Origin as a commercial astronaut. At the time of that flight she became the oldest person to travel to space. The mission, NS-16, lasted just over ten minutes from launch to landing.

Her contributions to aviation have been recognized through many honors. Those include institutional awards from Stephen’s College and Oklahoma State University, induction into Oklahoma State University’s Aviation Hall of Fame, and inscription on the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Wall of Honor. She has also been named an Honorary Colonel by a state governor and received multiple trophies and distinctions during her competitive flying years.

Public profile

Funk has long been visible in aviation communities as a pilot, instructor and regulator. Her story as one of the Mercury 13 and later as a participant in commercial suborbital flight has been widely reported, and she is often cited as an example of persistence in pursuing flight and space access for women.

Personal life

Wally Funk has remained unmarried and has no children. Her interests beyond flying have included bicycling, horse riding, hunting and fishing. Physically, she is described as approximately 1.70 meters tall with hazel-brown eyes and gray hair.

Latest updates

In 2021 Funk finally flew into space on Blue Origin’s NS-16 mission. That flight reaffirmed a lifelong connection to aviation and space exploration that began in her childhood and continued through five decades of professional work in flying, teaching and safety oversight.
