Wu Yibing Biography

Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing rose from junior Grand Slam success to historic breakthroughs on the ATP Tour. A left-hander known for solid returning and,

Early life and background

Wu Yibing was born on 14 October 1999 in Hangzhou, China. He began playing tennis at age four after initially considering badminton as a child; he has said he took up tennis partly to lose weight. As a youth he trained at the Potter's Wheel International Tennis Academy in Beijing and later received an invitation to continue his development at the I.M.G. Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

His parents are Wu Kang, a boxer, and Wu Fang. Wu lists NBA basketball as a sport he enjoys outside tennis and names Kevin Durant among his basketball favorites. He is unmarried.

Career

Wu established himself on the international stage as a junior in 2017. That year he reached the semifinals in both boys' singles and doubles at the Australian Open and went on to win both the boys' singles and doubles titles at the US Open, becoming the first Chinese male to secure a Grand Slam junior title. He partnered with Hsu Yu-hsiou in the US Open boys' doubles.

After junior success, Wu made his Davis Cup debut for China in 2017 and won his match against Jason Jung. He received wildcards for ATP events the same year, including his ATP debut at the Chengdu Open and a Masters-level debut at the Shanghai Masters.

In 2018 Wu won a match at the Shanghai Masters, defeating Li Zhe and taking a set off Kei Nishikori in the next round. His progress was interrupted by injury: from March 2019 through December 2021 he did not compete because of elbow, back, shoulder and wrist problems, and he underwent elbow surgery in 2020.

Wu returned to form in 2022. He won multiple Challenger titles in the United States, including back-to-back events in July at tournaments in Rome, Georgia and Indianapolis. Those results helped him climb the rankings and made him one of the most successful Chinese players on the Challenger circuit. At the US Open in 2022 he reached the third round, becoming the first Chinese male player in the Open era to win a US Open main-draw match and the first to reach a Grand Slam third round since 1946. He rose to a career-high ranking of world No. 131 on 12 September 2022 and later to No. 97 on 6 February 2023 after a finals appearance at the Cleveland Challenger, becoming the second Chinese man to enter the ATP Top 100.

Wu's breakthrough on the ATP Tour came at the 2023 Dallas Open. He beat Michael Mmoh, Denis Shapovalov and Adrian Mannarino to reach his first ATP quarterfinal and semifinal, then defeated world No. 8 Taylor Fritz in the semis to become the first Chinese man in the Open Era to beat a top-10 opponent. He went on to win the final against John Isner, claiming his first ATP Tour-level singles title and becoming the first Chinese man to win an ATP singles title in the Open Era. That title pushed him into the highest ATP ranking ever achieved by a Chinese male player, entering the top 60 in February 2023.

Throughout 2023 Wu competed at a range of tournaments. He took part in the Adelaide International qualifying, the Australian Open as a wildcard, and Masters events including Indian Wells, Miami and the Italian Open, recording wins such as his first Masters-level victory at the Miami Open over Kyle Edmund and a three-set win over Richard Gasquet in Rome. On clay he reached his first clay-court quarterfinal in Geneva before retiring in the quarterfinal match. He also played at the French Open and other ATP events.

Public profile

Standing approximately 1.83 m (6'0") and listed around 80 kg (176 lbs), Wu is known for a strong return and forehand. His coaches have included Gerardo Azcurra and Marcos Baghdatis. On-court moments have brought wider attention: at Wimbledon in early July 2023 and again at the Citi Open in Washington on 31 July 2023 he experienced breathing difficulties and collapsed during matches; medical staff assisted him and he has sought further checks following those incidents.

Latest updates

At the end of 2022 Wu's year-end ranking was No. 119, a substantial leap from the previous season. In 2023 he continued to build his ATP résumé with Challenger finals and tour-level victories, highlighted by his Dallas Open title and breakthroughs at Masters events. He remains among the highest-ranked Chinese men in tennis history.
