Early life and background

Yash Ravi Singh Thakur was born on 28 December 1998. He is Indian by nationality and is associated with Nagpur, Maharashtra as his hometown. Sources list Kolkata, West Bengal and Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh as places connected to his birth. He grew up playing cricket and joined formal coaching at the Pravin Hinganikar Cricket Academy in Nagpur in 2011, where his early coaches included Pravin Hinganikar and Nitin Kanhere.

Thakur began his cricketing journey as a wicketkeeper-batter and admired Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Under guidance at the academy, and on the recommendation of his first coach, he shifted his focus toward bowling and developed as a right-arm off-break bowler while remaining a right-handed batter.

Career

Thakur progressed through India’s domestic youth pathways, representing Chhattisgarh at under-16 and under-19 levels. He featured in age-group tournaments such as the Vijay Merchant Trophy, the Cooch Behar Trophy and the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, producing several notable innings and contributions with the ball during those seasons.

His performances for Chhattisgarh earned him selection to India’s Under-19 side. He played in the 2016–2017 Under-19 ACC Asia Cup, making his under-19 ODI debut against Malaysia and contributing with regular bowling appearances through the tournament, including in the semi-final and final.

In early 2017 Thakur made his List A debut for Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. During that season he produced a three-wicket haul that stood out as his best bowling figure of the competition. He was subsequently named in India Under-19 squads that toured England and played youth ODIs at home during 2017, although injury later kept him out of the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.

Thakur established himself in Vidarbha’s senior setup across formats. He made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy in November 2018 and recorded maiden wickets and multiple multi-wicket performances in that competition, including four-wicket hauls in Ranji matches. He was part of the Vidarbha team that won the Ranji Trophy title in the 2018–2019 season and featured in the Irani Cup that followed.

In limited-overs domestic cricket, Thakur has been an effective wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy across several seasons. He claimed multiple three- and four-wicket hauls in T20 and one-day tournaments, and in the 2019–2020 Vijay Hazare campaign he finished with a productive wicket tally across seven matches. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy he produced a four-wicket performance with an exceptional economy against Manipur in November 2019.

Thakur has also been involved with the Indian Premier League environment: in 2020 he was selected as a net bowler for Punjab Kings and trained with the squad in Dubai. Ahead of the 2023 IPL season, he was signed by Lucknow Super Giants and wore the franchise jersey number 9; he had previously sported number 28 while playing for India Under-19.

Playing profile

Yash Thakur stands around 175 cm tall and is listed at approximately 60 kg. He bowls right-arm off-break and bats right-handed. His eye and hair colour are recorded as black. Early coaching and a shift from wicketkeeping helped shape him into a bowling all-round contributor in domestic cricket.

Personal life

Thakur’s parents are Ravi Thakur, described as a businessman, and Kajal Thakur. He has a sister, Shweta Thakur, who has pursued legal studies. He follows Hinduism and is unmarried. His nickname is reported as "Gabbu." He has expressed admiration for Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Public profile

Throughout his career Thakur has been known for his steady domestic contributions with the ball and useful lower-order batting in age-group cricket. He has worn different jersey numbers in youth and franchise contexts and has trained with IPL teams, experiences that have supplemented his domestic development.

Latest updates

In 2021 Thakur continued to play regularly for Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, including recording a maiden five-wicket haul in December 2021. In 2023 he was part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad for the IPL season.
