Yastika Bhatia Biography

Yastika Bhatia is an Indian left-handed batter and wicketkeeper from Vadodara who made her international debut for India in 2021. Known for a calm approach

Early life and background

Yastika Harish Bhatia was born on 11 January 2000 in Baroda (now Vadodara), Gujarat. She grew up in a family supportive of her cricketing ambitions: her father Harish and mother Garima encouraged her from a young age, and her elder sister Josita also played cricket at the domestic level. Yastika began training at age eight when her father enrolled her and her sister in a school cricket academy. She attended Delhi Public School, Kalali in Vadodara and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts through Amity University, studying online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite some local resistance to a girl taking up the sport, her parents remained steadfast in supporting her. During the lockdown period in 2020 her father even arranged a makeshift practice net in their apartment parking area so she could continue working on her batting with tennis balls. That improvisation, her family’s backing and focused coaching contributed to the reflexes and wrist work she later displayed on bigger stages.

Career

Yastika is a left-handed batter who also keeps wicket and bowls slow left-arm orthodox occasionally. She rose through the Baroda age-group system and represented Baroda at various levels, including Baroda Women, Baroda U-23 Women and West Zone Women. In 2016 she featured prominently in a West Zone U-19 competition, compiling 230 runs at an average of 115 and recording a one-day century of 131 against Maharashtra. That season also included a key 60 against Mumbai and helped raise her profile as a talented youngster.

She was selected for the National Cricket Academy U-19 program in Bengaluru and later represented India at A-team level. By 2019 she had earned selection in India A for tours, and in December 2019 she was part of the India A squad for Australia. Domestically she captained the West Zone Women’s side in inter-zone competitions and recovered from a difficult period to score a T20 century for the U-23 national tournament.

Yastika’s senior India debut came in September and October 2021 on a tour of Australia. She made her One-Day International debut on 21 September 2021, her Test debut on 26 September 2021, and her T20I debut on 7 October 2021. She wears jersey number 11 for the India women’s national team.

Her most notable performance on that tour came in the third ODI, when she scored 64 off 69 balls in a successful chase. That innings played a central role in India achieving a historic run chase and ended Australia’s 26-match winning streak in women’s ODIs. Earlier on the tour she had formed a steady partnership with India’s captain in one match and also featured in practice and warm-up fixtures for the national side.

Coaching and playing style

Yastika has worked with several coaches throughout her development, including Santosh Chaugule and former India wicketkeeper Kiran More, who helped her add power-hitting elements to her game in preparation for the Australian tour. Dr. Drashti Shah is listed as her fitness trainer. She favors the pull shot, bats left-handed and has been described as having a calm, jovial presence on the field while able to shift gears when the situation demands.

Public profile

Yastika’s playing temperament and wicketkeeping skills earned her national selectors’ attention, and she was the only player from Vadodara selected for the NCA U-23 camp at the time. Her rise received local and national media notice, particularly after her impactful performance in Australia. Outside cricket, she enjoys listening to music, playing guitar, watching movies, cycling and cooking. She counts Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Virat Kohli among her favourite batters, and Adam Gilchrist among wicketkeepers she admires.

Personal resilience

Yastika faced a challenging period in 2020 when members of her state senior women’s team experienced a troubling incident involving their coach; she took time away from matches for recovery and received family and medical support before returning to form. Her comeback included a focused training regimen and leadership roles at zonal level.

Latest updates

By late 2021 Yastika had established herself as a young international cricketer for India with appearances across formats. Her development continued under the guidance of coaches who worked on technique and power-hitting ahead of international assignments. At a height of approximately 1.58 m and listed playing weight of about 48 kg, she continued to represent Baroda domestically while remaining in contention for national selection.
