Yoshihide Suga Biography
Yoshihide Suga is a Japanese politician from Akita Prefecture who rose from rural beginnings to become Chief Cabinet Secretary and later Prime Minister. A
Early life and backgroundYoshihide Suga was born on 6 December 1948 in Ogachi (now part of Yuzawa), a farming town in Akita Prefecture. He was the eldest child of Wasaburo, a strawberry farmer who also worked for the South Manchuria Railway Company during World War II, and Tatsu, a schoolteacher. Growing up on the family farm, Suga helped with agricultural work and has described how the hardships of rural life taught him patience and a strong work ethic.
After finishing Yuzawa High School, Suga moved to Tokyo at age 18. He took jobs to support himself and later enrolled at Hosei University, where he studied law and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1973. While at Hosei he worked a variety of part-time jobs, served as vice-captain of the university karate team and earlier had played baseball in high school.
Career
Suga’s entry into politics began after university when he took a position in an electrical maintenance company and developed an interest in public affairs. Seeking political connections, he approached his university’s career center and, at 26, became secretary to Hikosaburō Okonogi, a member of the House of Representatives from Yokohama. He served in that role for more than a decade, learning the practicalities of politics behind the scenes.
Leaving the secretary post in October 1986, Suga ran for the Yokohama city assembly the following year. Campaigning on foot and meeting thousands of residents door-to-door, he won a seat and later served two four-year terms. In 1996 he made the jump to national politics, winning a Diet seat at age 47 on the Liberal Democratic Party ticket. He helped popularize tsujidachi, a form of soapbox street speaking by legislators that became commonplace.
Suga’s parliamentary career included multiple re-elections and growing responsibilities. He was appointed Senior Vice Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications in 2005 and served as Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and Minister for Postal Privatization in 2006. That same year he received an additional portfolio as Minister of State for Decentralization Reform before leaving the cabinet in 2007.
Within the LDP, Suga held organizational roles, becoming chairman of party organization and campaign headquarters in 2011 and Executive Acting Secretary-General in 2012. When Shinzo Abe returned to power in December 2012, Suga was appointed Chief Cabinet Secretary. He served in that role from December 2012 until September 2020, becoming the longest-serving holder of the post. During his time as Chief Cabinet Secretary he was closely involved in policy initiatives such as the hometown donation tax system and played a central role in government communications.
In 2019 Suga gained high-profile visibility by announcing the name of Japan’s new imperial era, Reiwa, a moment that increased his public recognition and earned him the informal nickname “Uncle Reiwa.” He worked alongside Shinzo Abe during the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and was a critic of how some parts of the bureaucracy managed the crisis.
Following Abe’s resignation in August 2020 for health reasons, Suga was elected president of the Liberal Democratic Party on 14 September 2020 and was formally chosen as Prime Minister by the National Diet on 16 September 2020.
Public profile
Suga is associated with the Liberal Democratic Party and is known within political circles as a close Abe ally. Observers have noted his steady, workmanlike approach rather than showmanship; his public speeches, including his victory speech as LDP president, have sometimes been described as deliberate and restrained.
On a personal level, Suga is married to Mariko Suga and the couple have three grown sons. He lists travel, reading newspapers, doing sit-ups and long walks among his hobbies. He is a teetotaler. His favorite foods include soup curry, soba noodles and ricotta hotcakes.
Latest updates
Suga’s most recent prominent roles were as Chief Cabinet Secretary from 2012 to 2020 and then as leader of the LDP and Prime Minister in September 2020. His political rise from a farming family in Akita to the top office of Japan is frequently noted as an example of a non-dynastic ascent in a political culture where family connections have often mattered.
