Aiden Markram (Cricketer) Biography

Aiden Kyle Markram is a South African international cricketer who has captained his country in limited-overs formats and led youth sides to major success.A

Early life and background

Aiden Kyle Markram was born on 4 October 1994 in Centurion, Gauteng, and grew up in Pretoria. He attended Cornwall Hill College and later matriculated from Pretoria Boys High School in 2012. From a very young age he was involved in sport; he received his first cricket kit at two and, through his school years, played rugby and soccer alongside cricket. He also competed in indoor cricket and represented the Villagers club in Irene before concentrating more fully on cricket during high school.

After finishing school Markram spent time at the Tuks Cricket Academy for the 2013 season. There he trained under the academy’s coaching staff and captained the Tuks 2 Premier League side while refining his game for almost a year. His development through youth ranks included playing for Northerns’ age-group teams and making his first-class debut for Northerns on 9 October 2014.

Career

Markram rose quickly through South Africa’s youth system, captaining the national Under-19 side that won the 2014 Under-19 World Cup in the UAE, where he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. He established himself in domestic cricket with Northerns and the Titans and was part of the Paarl Rocks squad in the inaugural Mzansi Super League.

Internationally, Markram made his Test debut on 28 September 2017 against Bangladesh and his One-Day International debut on 1 February 2018 versus India. He made his T20 international debut on 10 September 2021 against Sri Lanka. A right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm off spin, he has been used primarily at the top of the order and has expressed a preference for the No. 3 batting position.

Early in his Test career Markram recorded notable achievements, including becoming the first South African to score two centuries in his first three Tests. In white-ball cricket he was appointed as South Africa’s ODI captain in February 2018 during the tour of India, becoming the country’s youngest ODI captain since Graeme Smith at 23 years and 123 days old.

Markram has played in several T20 franchise competitions. He spent time with the Paarl Rocks, joined Hampshire as their overseas player in 2019, and featured in the Indian Premier League. In 2021 he was picked up by the Punjab Kings for the latter half of the season and in 2022 was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad. During the 2023 IPL season he was named captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, though he was replaced as captain by Pat Cummins on 4 March 2024.

Among his career highlights is a standout performance at the 2023 men’s Cricket World Cup where he recorded the fastest century by a batter in that tournament’s history, reaching three figures in 49 deliveries in a match against Sri Lanka. He was also part of the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year in 2021 and earned recognition domestically as Domestic Newcomer of the Year at Cricket South Africa’s 2017 awards.

Public profile

Markram is known for wearing jersey number 4 for South Africa and number 94 in the IPL. Off the field he has a visible public life: he married long-term partner Nicole Daniella O’Connor on 22 July 2023. The couple share a home in South Africa with their two pet dogs, Rex and Pheebs. Nicole runs an online jewellery business called Nadora Jewellery and is occasionally described as a wine enthusiast.

Personal details often shared in profiles note his physical appearance—he is listed at approximately 6 feet 1 inch (185 cm) tall with brown hair and dark brown eyes—and some of his cricketing influences, including AB de Villiers as a favourite batter and Wasim Akram as a favourite bowler.
