Akash Deep (Cricketer) Biography

Right-arm fast-medium bowler from Bihar who came through Bengal’s system, represented RCB in the IPL, played for India A and made his Test debut for India.

Early life and background
Akash Deep was born on 15 December 1996 in Dehri, Sasaram in Bihar. Raised in a modest household, he attended a local village school and grew up playing cricket in his locality. Family difficulties in his teens — including his father’s illness and later the deaths of his father and a brother in 2015 — interrupted his early training and led him to move between Bihar, West Bengal and Delhi while pursuing the game.

His formative cricketing years included a spell of training in Durgapur from 2010 and later time in Kolkata, where he shifted his focus from batting to bowling. Standing about 1.8 m (5'11") and working to build his physical fitness, he developed into a right-arm fast-medium pacer who bowls an inswinger and bats right-handed.

Career
Akash Deep’s domestic breakthrough came through club cricket in Kolkata, where he turned out for United Club and Mohun Bagan Athletic Club and worked his way into Bengal age-group sides. He was part of Bengal’s Under-23 setup and was coached by Saurashish Lahiri during that phase. Sourav Ganguly’s Vision2020 program also identified him among promising pace prospects and provided support that contributed to his development alongside peers such as Mukesh Kumar.

In 2019 Akash made his debut for Bengal in all formats and later represented Rest of India in BCCI domestic competitions. He gained exposure with India A in 2023 and was a member of the Indian squad for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, which won the gold medal.

In the Indian Premier League he was a net bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021 and joined their squad later that season. RCB bought him at the 2022 auction for Rs 20 lakhs. He made his IPL debut on 27 March 2022 against Punjab Kings, taking one wicket for 38 runs. He wore jersey number 11 for RCB during his time with the franchise.

Internationally, Akash’s progression reached the highest level when he made his Test debut for India against England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on 23 February 2024. In December 2023 he had been named in India’s touring ODI squad for the South Africa series. In January 2025 he was withdrawn from the Indian squad ahead of the fifth Test against Australia due to a back injury sustained in earlier matches.

Playing style and training
Akash Deep is a right-handed lower-order batter and primarily a right-arm fast-medium bowler known for an inswinging stock delivery. He places emphasis on physical conditioning and regular gym work, lifting weights to build strength and endurance for pace bowling. He continues to participate in cricket camps at the AB Cricket Academy in his native Sasaram and has spoken about the pride he feels seeing boys and girls take part in local coaching programs.

Public profile
Off the field, Akash has spoken about influences such as Virat Kohli and Josh Hazlewood, and he has shared memorable moments such as receiving his IPL cap from Kohli and recalling MS Dhoni’s 2011 World Cup six as an early inspiration. He has also faced personal hardship: during the second COVID-19 wave in 2021 he lost family members and temporarily left an IPL stint to care for relatives; he subsequently assisted his mother through her illness.

Latest updates
As of early 2025, Akash has Test experience for India but was sidelined from selection for a Test due to a back injury in January 2025. He remains an active first-class and domestic player with a background representing Bengal, India A and Rest of India, and continues work on fitness and bowling development.
