When she was one year old she developed polio, an illness that affected her lower body. Her family supported her through childhood and later moved to Ahmedabad in 2004.

Bhavina studied at the Blind People’s Association (BPA) in Ahmedabad, where she completed an ITI course. It was during her time at BPA that she developed an interest in table tennis and began training seriously in the sport.

Career

Patel competes in para table tennis in the Women’s Singles Class 4 category. Over the course of her international career she has accumulated numerous medals across events: as of August 2021 she had won five gold, 14 silver (including a silver at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics), and eight bronze medals at international competitions.

She rose through the ranks with notable performances from the early 2010s. Bhavina qualified for the Paralympic Games on more than one occasion. She secured qualification for the 2016 Rio Paralympics but did not compete because an administrative form was not completed. She later qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics and became the first Indian table tennis player to win a medal at the Paralympic Games when she reached the final of the Women’s Singles Class 4 event and won the silver medal at Tokyo 2020.

At the Tokyo Paralympics, Patel recorded a high-profile quarterfinal victory over Rio gold medallist and then-world number five Borislava Peric Rankovic of Serbia, winning 11-5, 11-6, 11-7. She then defeated China’s Zhang Miao in the semifinals before finishing with silver after the final.

Her coaching team has included Lalan Doshi and Tejalben Lakhia. Beyond medals, she has been recognised with awards such as the Sardar Patel and Eklavya awards, and she has reportedly obtained employment with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) through the sports quota.
