Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was born on 21 February 1980. He is Bhutanese by nationality and was born in a hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. He grew up in Thimphu and completed his early schooling at Yangchenphug High School.

His family is part of Bhutan’s royal lineage. His father is King Jigme Singye Wangchuck and his mother is Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon, one of the four wives of the previous king. He has two full siblings, Princess Dechen Yangzom Wangchuck and Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and several half-siblings from his father’s other marriages.

Education

Jigme Khesar’s education included studies both in Bhutan and abroad. He attended Phillips Academy Andover and Cushing Academy in Massachusetts, and later pursued higher education at Wheaton College and Magdalen College, University of Oxford. He also completed studies at the National Defence College in New Delhi. His qualifications include a degree in a Foreign Service programme and International Relations from Oxford.

Career

As heir to the throne, Jigme Khesar accompanied his father on many state visits and diplomatic engagements, representing Bhutan internationally prior to his accession. He was present at major events such as sessions of the United Nations, where he addressed global issues including child welfare. In October 2004 he was invested as the 16th Trongsa Penlop, a traditional title in Bhutan.

When his father abdicated on 9 December 2006, Jigme Khesar succeeded as head of state. A public coronation ceremony took place on 1 November 2008 to mark the centenary of Bhutan’s monarchy, officially crowning him as the country’s fifth monarch. At the time of accession he was one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs.

His reign has been marked by attention to governance, legal and social reforms, and traditional responsibilities. A new Treaty of Friendship with India was signed during the period after his succession, replacing the earlier 1949 treaty. The Constitution of Bhutan was adopted by the first elected parliament in July 2008 during his reign. Early in his kingship he launched initiatives addressing land registration through a national cadastral resurvey in March 2009.

The king has also emphasized welfare programmes rooted in Bhutanese traditions. One established practice, Kidu, provides direct assistance to citizens in need and reflects the country’s emphasis on Gross National Happiness. In response to appeals from young people, he introduced a military-style volunteer training programme, the DeSuung Training Programme, in 2011 to prepare volunteers to assist in emergencies and public events; more than 3,000 volunteers completed the training.

As supreme commander of the armed forces, he has taken an active role in emergency responses, notably mobilizing forces and volunteer units during the 2012 Wangduephodrang Dzong fire to protect people and cultural assets.

Public profile

Jigme Khesar has been known to combine traditional royal duties with a more modern, public-facing style. Media and public attention have highlighted his diplomatic engagements, personal popularity, and the visibility he and his wife bring to the monarchy. He has been described with affectionate epithets by observers, and foreign visitors have noted the royal couple’s warm reception during state visits.

Personal life

The king married Jetsun Pema on 13 October 2011 in Punakha in a traditional Buddhist ceremony that was celebrated nationally for three days and broadcast widely. The marriage introduced a widely popular queen who has accompanied him on many official engagements.

The couple have two sons. Their first son, Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, was born on 5 February 2016; the birth was marked by nationwide celebrations including the planting of 108,000 tree saplings. Their second son, Prince Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck, was born on 19 March 2020.
