Early life and background

Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu was born on 10 December 1949 in Shivrampur village of Sadar Upazila, Pabna District, then part of East Bengal in the Dominion of Pakistan. He grew up in a middle-class family; his parents are Sharfuddin Ansari and Khairunnessa. He completed his schooling at Radhanagar Majumder Academy School and College in Pabna and went on to study at Rajshahi University, earning a Master of Science in 1974 and later an LLB.

Career

Chuppu began political activity during his student years and served in leadership roles within the student and youth wings of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He took part in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War as a freedom fighter and acted as convener of the Sadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangam Parishad in Pabna district. After independence he continued in politics and in 1974 served as president of the Pabna District Jubo League.

Following the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the ensuing political turmoil, Chuppu was imprisoned for three years for protesting the new government. After his release he spent time in India with colleagues and later worked as a journalist at the national newspaper Daily Banglar Bani for around two years beginning in 1980. He also contributed articles to other Bangladeshi newspapers.

In 1982 Chuppu joined Bangladesh’s judicial service as a Munsef (assistant judge). Over the next two decades he rose through the judiciary, serving roughly 25 years and ultimately retiring as a District and Sessions Judge in 2006. During his judicial career he held roles including general secretary of the Judicial Service Association (elected 1995) and coordinator of the Bangabandhu murder trial when appointed by the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs after the Awami League returned to power.

After the 2001 national election, he served as chairman of the Judicial Inquiry Commission set up to investigate abuses attributed to the BNP-Jamaat alliance. In 2006 he was appointed chairman of the Labour Court. From 2008 to 2011 he practiced as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Between March 2011 and March 2016 he served as a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Chuppu also participated in national and international judicial forums, attending seminars, workshops and conferences on case and court management. In addition to his legal work, he has held positions in the private and financial sectors: he has been vice chairman of the board of directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd., representing JMC Builders Ltd., and has worked as an advisor at NRB Global Bank Ltd.

Return to politics and party roles

After retiring from formal judicial service Chuppu re-engaged with the Awami League. In 2020 he was appointed a member of the party’s advisory council. In 2022 he became chairman of the Awami League’s Publicity and Publications cell following the death of HT Imam, and during the party’s 2022 national council he served as election commissioner.
