Early life and backgroundPalanivenu Veeramuthuvel was born on 22 October 1976 in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with a father who worked as a technician for the Southern Railways and a homemaker mother, he completed his schooling at Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School in Viluppuram. He holds a diploma in mechanical engineering from a polytechnic in Tamil Nadu, a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Sri Sairam Engineering College (2001), an ME in Mechanical Engineering with a systems engineering specialization from NIT Tiruchirappalli (2002), and a PhD in Mechanical Design and Optimization from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (2017). Career
Veeramuthuvel began his engineering career in industry, moving to Coimbatore in January 2003 to work as a senior engineer at Lakshmi Machine Works Limited. In 2004 he joined the HAL Rotary Wing Research & Design Centre in Bengaluru, contributing to projects aimed at developing indigenous aircraft for the Indian Armed Forces. In December 2004 he entered the Indian Space Research Organisation as a Scientist Engineer and has been with ISRO since.
Over his ISRO career he has worked on several notable missions and programmes. He was a team member on the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), contributing to the development of the satellite and the spacecraft for the interplanetary transfer. He later moved into programme and infrastructure roles, serving as deputy director of ISRO’s Space Infrastructure Programme at the central office where he worked on initiatives to strengthen launch-station capabilities.
Veeramuthuvel served as Associate Project Director on the Chandrayaan-2 mission. In that role he was part of the team that engaged with international partners, including discussions with NASA about payloads such as a Laser Retroreflector Array. After Chandrayaan-2, he was appointed Project Director for Chandrayaan-3 in November 2019. Under his leadership the project team focused on refining the propulsion and touchdown systems for the Vikram lander and preparing the Pragyan rover for surface operations.
Chandrayaan-3 launched on 14 July 2023 aboard the LVM3-M4 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. After a 39-day transit, the spacecraft reached the lunar south pole region and achieved a soft landing on 23 August 2023, with the Vikram lander touching down at 18:04 IST. The landing drew congratulations from national and international leaders and agencies, and ISRO described the mission as achieving a soft lunar touchdown.
