Early life and background

Pooja Gehlot was born on 15 March 1997 in Narela, New Delhi, and grew up with roots in Farmana, Haryana. She developed an interest in sport very early, beginning to learn wrestling basics at about six years old while accompanying her paternal uncle, Dharamveer Singh, who was a wrestler. Her family includes father Vijender Singh, mother Jagwanti Devi, a brother Ankit Gahlawat and Pushpendra Gahlawat, and a sister Priyanka Gahlawat. Her father worked as a lab assistant at a Sarvodya Bal Vidyalaya.

Although her father was initially hesitant about wrestling as a career choice, Pooja also competed in volleyball at the national level before committing fully to wrestling. She completed a B.P.Ed from Lovely Professional University.

Career

Pooja made her competitive debut at the 2016 National Junior Wrestling Championship. That year she took gold at the Junior National Championship in Ranchi in the 48 kg category. An injury during practice in 2016 kept her away from the mat for about a year, but she returned to competition and continued to move up in weight classes.

In 2017 she won the gold medal in the 51 kg division at the Asian Junior Championships in Taiwan. She later transitioned to senior-level international competition and earned the silver medal in the 51 kg category at the World U23 Wrestling Championships in Budapest in 2019, becoming the second Indian woman to claim a world-level medal in that category after an earlier Indian podium finisher.

At home, Pooja claimed the Bharat Kesari title at a Haryana state freestyle event held to commemorate the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev; the victory carried a cash prize. Her primary coach and mentor has been her uncle Dharamveer Singh.
