Early life and backgroundRajesh Jais was born on 6 September 1969 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He grew up in Ranchi and attended local schools including a government school in Kantatoli, Shradhanand Seva Ashram and Gauri Dutt Mandelia High School. He completed his graduation at Marwari College, Ranchi, and went on to pursue a postgraduate course in English Journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC, JNU, New Delhi). He also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Acting at the National School of Drama, New Delhi.
Jais’s family has links to performance and service: his father served in the Indian Air Force and his parents were associated with the theatre group Minoo Mumtaz. While at school and college he trained in NCC as an Airforce cadet and undertook a range of military-style courses and attachments, including an Airforce Attachment Course with No. 02 Bihar Air Squadron NCC, Ranchi. He earned President’s Scout recognition and at one point commanded a contingent that performed for then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Career
Jais began his professional life with varied work experiences including a period as an announcer with All India Radio’s Yuvwani programme (1987–1988), journalism with the Ranchi Express and freelancing for other publications. He also worked odd jobs such as accounting at a tailor’s shop and tutoring school students while building his theatre and acting credentials.
His stage work includes productions guided by his professor Ajay Malkani, among them adaptations and plays such as Mughal-e-Azam, Summerfolk, Yahudi Ki Ladki, Hiroshima, My Love and Different Stories. After formal training at the National School of Drama, he transitioned into screen acting. His film debut came in the 1995 Hindi film Oh Darling Yeh Hai India, and his early television work included the role of Nanu in the 1994 DD National serial Shanti.
Across television and film Jais has built a steady career as a character and supporting actor. His television credits include serials such as Kya Mast Hai Life (2009), Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (2011), Shastri Sisters (2014) and Crime Patrol (2015). He has appeared in a number of Hindi films including Gandhi The Mahatma (2010), Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018), Kalank (2019), Indoo Ki Jawani (2020) and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023). He also worked in regional cinema, appearing in the Nagpuri film Dhumkkudiya (2019), and has been part of several short films including The Last Supper (2020), Kuchch Sapne Udhaar Ke (2021) and Unresolved (2021).
