Early life and background

Rajkumar Ranjan Singh was born on 1 September 1952 in Kongba Nandeibamleikai, Imphal East, in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. He completed advanced studies in geography at Gauhati University, earning a Master of Arts, a Bachelor of Teaching and a Doctor of Philosophy in Geography in 1982. His parents are Shri Rajkumar Nilamani Singh and Smt. Ningthemcha Ongbi Achoubi. He is married to Chungkham Debala Devi; the couple have two sons and a daughter.

Career

Ranjan Singh began his professional life in education. After finishing his postgraduate studies, he took a position as a lecturer at Ideal Girls’ College in 1973 and taught there until 1984. He then joined Manipur University’s Department of Earth Science as an assistant professor and moved into university administration, serving as Deputy Registrar beginning in 1985. Over the following decades he held senior administrative posts at Manipur University, including Registrar from 2004 to 2008, and later director-in-charge of the UGC Academic Staff College as well as College Development Director. He retired from the university in 2012.

After leaving academia, Ranjan Singh entered politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat in 2014, losing that election.
