Early life and backgroundRamesh Bais was born on 2 August 1947 in Raipur, then part of Madhya Pradesh (now in Chhattisgarh). He completed schooling at Madhav Rao Sapre Higher Secondary School in Raipur and holds a B.Sc degree. Bais is identified with the Kshatriya (Rajput) community and lists Raipur as his hometown.
Career
Bais began his public life at the municipal level, becoming a councillor in Raipur Municipal Corporation at the age of 32. He entered electoral state politics as a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Mandir Hasod constituency, serving from 1980 to 1985 and participating in committee work including the Estimates and Library Committees.
He moved to national politics with his first election to the 9th Lok Sabha from Raipur in 1989. Over the following decades he won the Raipur parliamentary seat repeatedly, serving in the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha terms through 2019. During his long parliamentary career Bais served on numerous committees including public accounts, public undertakings, petroleum and natural gas, rules, and others. He also held the party role of chief whip for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha during one of his terms.
Within government, Bais held several ministerial posts. He served as Union Minister of State for Steel and Mines in the late 1980s, and later held responsibilities as Minister of State in portfolios including Chemicals and Fertilizers, Information and Broadcasting, and Mines. At times he served with independent charge, including for the Ministry of Mines and for the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
Beyond ministerial duties, Bais occupied organizational roles within the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, including a vice-presidential post in the state party and membership of the national executive. He was also president of the Madhya Pradesh Seeds and Farm Development Corporation.

After decades in electoral politics, Bais moved into gubernatorial roles. He was appointed the 18th Governor of Tripura, serving from 29 July 2019 to 13 July 2021. He then served as the 10th Governor of Jharkhand from 14 July 2021 to 12 February 2023. In those capacities he also acted as chancellor for several state universities in Jharkhand. In February 2023 he became the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra and held that office through 31 July 2024.
