Ravi Bishnoi (Cricketer), Biography

Ravi Bishnoi is an Indian leg-spinner from Rajasthan who rose through grassroots cricket to become a leading wicket-taker at youth level and an IPL signing

Early life and background

Ravi Bishnoi was born on 5 September 2000 in Birami, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and grew up in Jodhpur. He attended Mahavir Public School and completed education up to the 10th standard. His family includes his father Mangilal Bishnoi, who worked as a government school headmaster, his mother Sohni Devi, and siblings Ashok, Anita and Rinku Bishnoi. From an early age Bishnoi was dedicated to cricket; he and friends built a small training facility called Spartans Cricket Academy in Jodhpur in 2013, doing much of the physical work themselves. He used to travel long distances by bicycle to reach the academy.

Career

Bishnoi began his cricketing journey as a medium‑fast bowler before switching to spin on the advice of coach Shahrukh Pathan. He bowls leg-spin with a googly and bats right‑handed. Representing Rajasthan in domestic age-group competitions, he emerged as a wicket‑taking spinner in national events. In the 2019 Vinoo Mankad Trophy he finished with 17 wickets in seven matches, the tournament’s highest tally, which helped him secure selection for India’s Under‑19 World Cup squad.

At the ICC Under‑19 Cricket World Cup 2020 Bishnoi was the leading wicket-taker, finishing with 17 wickets — the most by any Indian in a single edition of the tournament. His performances at youth level brought him to the attention of higher‑level coaches and scouts and led to an Indian Premier League contract. Bishnoi signed with Kings XI Punjab ahead of the 2020 IPL season on a reported 2 crore deal.

He made his T20 international debut on 16 February 2022 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, and his One Day International debut on 6 October 2022 versus South Africa at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Domestically he has represented Rajasthan.

Public profile

Bishnoi is known for his leg‑break and googly variations and has been viewed by commentators and parts of the cricket community as a promising spin talent for India. He has cited the legendary leg‑spinner Shane Warne as an influence and also admires bowlers such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Rashid Khan. His preferred batsman is Virat Kohli.

His parents have been supportive of his career; media coverage notes that his mother especially enjoys watching matches with him. Early sacrifices and commitment to practice — including long travels to training — are recurring themes in accounts of his rise.

Controversy

Bishnoi was sanctioned by the ICC following his involvement in an on‑field altercation between India and Bangladesh after the ICC Under‑19 World Cup 2020 final.

Latest updates

Bishnoi continues to represent Rajasthan domestically and has been part of the Kings XI Punjab IPL squad. Coaches who have guided him include Pradyot Singh and Shahrukh Pathan. He remains unmarried and, as of 2022, was 22 years old.
